Back at the NOC, BOFH, IP-space for Samfundet
Oct 19th, 2004 by Anders Kringstad

While some people may enjoy sleeping late on their daily schedule, I can’t. That is, I shouldn’t. Today I did. To pay for my sins I have to buy the others the lunch (no, not with my money) and do the cleaning after lunch. Darn 🙂

It’s ok tho. I still smile. You know how that goes don’t you? It’s been some days and you still got a big smile plastered all over your face, impossible to remove. So, to avoid getting too tangled up in my own brain I decided to do a little Quiz over at El. Reg, the home of Mr. BOFH, Simon, or Si, as we regulars call him. You may want to check this one, about Wireless networks in your workplace. These are my scores:

The BOFH mobile comms quiz:

You answered mostly D

The healthy cynicism we expect from a true professional.

Thank you there, Si, I really enjoyed that one. “A true professional”. That phrase has a good ring to it in my ears. So; Meanwhile here in the Grep NOC we have clamped down on the bandwidth spendt on surfing by adding a transparent proxy, and I myself have been bussy requesting IP-segments for new customers WAN-connections.

Last night.. I had the usual hours at Samfundet, and had the pleasure of sending an email to ITEA/Orakel at NTNU asking for a realocation of our IP-space to a somewhat bigger network as we have filled up the /24 we’re currently using. A whole new /23 will be coming our way instead I hope.

Oh by the way. I’m still smiling. =)

Shine
Oct 17th, 2004 by Anders Kringstad

If you have seen her smileyou will know what I mean. Her smile is like a soft, yet tender, delicious touch.Like a summer breeze, her breath explores the air, leaving a fragrance so fair.I want to hold her closeto tell her how I feel; Please let me hold your hand, one night when we both feel, things are right,So we can go outsideand look at the stars, they shine so bright. And then I’ll pick one for youand tell you about my love so true.

  ..to be continued I hope.

Full Duplex aka FD
Oct 13th, 2004 by Anders Kringstad

This Friday and Saturday it’s a bunch of bands gathering at Samfundet to do the Duplex Festival 100. For my part I’m looking forward to hear ‘Bare Egil’ as it’s probably been 5-6 years since his huge hits were all over. He never quite have faded and I still remember some of the lyrics, so watch out for some beerbash-singing 🙂

Also featured this week are the news of Morten leaving Grep. After 3 years of coding and other stuff he feels its time to move on. Can’t blame him. Good luck to him in that new job across the river 🙂

I was up at 0620 this morning only to find that I was a bit late for my workout. Got there at 0710 and had a hour of workout, bike and running. Got to work at about 0820 and have been working with some DNS-hickups since. DNS are great when it works but when somethings wrong it really sucks. Hope things work before lunch, I’d hate to call customers and tell them something is broken when it’s only minutes away from working :p

Xplore 2004
Oct 10th, 2004 by Anders Kringstad

It’s been a long week, but I have had very much fun. On monday I went to Levanger to help out at Xplore 2004 as a part of the Vision-crew. As a part of the crew were two people I knew and had been working with before, and three unknown faces. It turned up that one of the newcomers, Torbjørn was a pleasant surprise. He had a real multitalent with video-editing, image-creating, music-composing and tracking, to mention a few. To be quite frank I hope I can get him on the team for AuLAN:Heat, he’d be the bomb (so watch out for mp3s or other creations from his alter ego, ‘Fatmaster’). The other two newcomers didn’t do much, either because they didn’t feel like it or because they felt unneeded. I don’t know. Ivar (smygarn) were also a part of the team but had to leave with a flu the second day. A lot of stuff were made and broadcasted through speakers, overheads, videos and music. All of that, or atleast the things I feel that I want to show the world, will be propperly linked to when it’s put in the right place. Bjørn Torkel (btd/tChr) and Jan-Erik (cryzeck) were also part of the crew with Jan-Erik as the chief and me and Bjørn Torkel as shiftleaders. All in all I sumarize the party as a very good thing(tm) and I got to meet a bunch of new and old friends. Thank you all for a very nice weekend.

In other news I’ve been to Samfundet today and did my duties as a cleaning boy at our shared room with FG. The place looked like it had been trashed during the night. Broken bottles all over. Took me and Berge about 45 minutes to get it cleaned up. Right now I am sitting in my computerroom and configuring a new kernel for my new-old firewall. Good old advantage is getting a chilled dusty space in my locker in the hallway. It’s served more than it’s time after 5 years as my first front to the Internet. Replacing it will be good ol’ forest, vamped up with 128 MB EDO-RAM, 166 Mhz CPU and some 36GB IDE-HDD. Not much horsepower there either, but one box is better than two, and in these days it’s nice to be able to cut down on the energybills 🙂 The kernel will be for now, a custompatched 2.4.28-pre4 with some firewall-stuff compiled in. Hope everythings goes smoothly tho. Advantage have really been a nice box, with uptimes breaking more than 350 days.

Oh well, the news is on TV, ttl kids 🙂

The wheel of time
Oct 1st, 2004 by Anders Kringstad

Once you set sail for the final destination there is no turning back. You may want to think that you can live forever, dream of eternal powers and life. There is no such thing. Deal with it however you may, you will die. Hah!

I myself plan to deal with it in a very good way this weekend. Guess what? I’m going to some parties! haha 😀 Never heard of that before? Gee, it’s not like I’ve never been to a party before.. Well. Tonight, or today rather, Magnus (meheeco) turns the big 5, yes, he’s 25 years old now, and a grown man! The party will set off at his place, but due to some mixup with Samfundet also turning 75 years old today I have to split the evening and start of with some partying with the Samfundet-bunch. I’ll team up with Magnus and the rest of the gang at Kings Cross at 22. Then, when I decide it’s time, I’ll go back to Samfundet and party until dawn. There’s nothing like weekends =)

On monday evening I go to Levanger to enjoy a week off. We’re having a computerparty there, named Xplore. The event will gather some 400 people and goes from Tuesday until Saturday. There’ll be a great bunch of people there that I know and it’ll be fun to see them again. I love computerparties =)

Also, Daybreak workouts are something new this week. I got only one across tho, but that’ll change next week since I’ll have hours off from my duties at the computerparty to go to the local gym (3T) up there. Daybreak workout is a concept I decided to try when I heard/learned that 3T, the gym I go to, opens at 0630. Way-way early for most people, I get to use 1-1,5 hours before work to work out. That’s very nice, and I get a head start on the daily activites. So.. what are *You* doing today? 😀

F.A.R.!
Sep 27th, 2004 by Anders Kringstad

Yes. Find And Rescue.I’d very much like to be rescued. Let’s be honest. Who would not like to be rescued away from their daily dose and into some special world with inteligent, smart, nice, interesting women? I for sure would. But never mind, I’ll settle with less, just make it One Girl with the right skills and iq and I’ll bring myself to the rescue.

As of off-hour stuff I have been to a lot of parties and had a little too much alcohol the recent days. Thursday I had enough at Mingle Vingle, a party for us newbies at Samfundet. On Friday it was Ralph Meyerz and the Jack Herren band at Samfundet, and we had some alcohol too. Went home late. On Saturday Ivar (smygarn) turned 19, or had his birthdayparty atleast, and after doing some warmup at his place, we went to.. yeah, Samfundet and dragged our asses around the house until uh.. ok, I went home at noon on Sunday. Others left earlier, I didn’t.

So, back to F.A.R. This is a scream, a shout, a far cry from beyond the grave. HELP! This next weekend Vidar (canidae) is due for two times 24 bottles of beer after taking a bet saying that if ITK did lift Regi’s big ship-bell we’d get just that. Beer. So. Before I die. F.A.R.! (And don’t forget the girls thank you)

..You\’re in the navy now — Fire in the hole!
Sep 23rd, 2004 by Anders Kringstad

Tuesday we had a little get-together to help Christian (saddlark) with his enrollment in the army^Wnavy. In one week today he’s leaving and not returning for months. I hope they’ll treat him just the way they should and that he’ll have a great time and such. But, we’ll for sure miss him. Me, Magnus (meheeco), Jens Ådne (Quarryman), Asbjørn (NotSane) and Stein Magnus (jodal) ate dinner and watched a naval movie (Yes, Steven Segal plays in it, do you guess its name?..) named ‘Under Siege’. It’s a classic movie tho. Fun to watch it again.

At work lately we have been reviewing our customerbase and the customer support. Thus, our new improved internal routines will help aid the customers even more. YES! Techsupport are finally going to be handed over to a dedicated team, and we’re going to hire someone for that job. The management already have someone pinpointed, and this will bring our bodycount up to 9 – an alltime high.

Samfundet is still great. I work Mondays and Wednesdays and the weekends offen end up with drinks and concerts there too. This Friday it’s Ralph Meyerz and the Jack Herren Band. Looking forward to that! Saturday Ivar (smygarn) turns 20, and I’ll give him a special gift — Beathe Uhse anyone?

Right now tho, it’s more customers to serve, and another great day to loose some weight while drinking beer and dancing the night away. What’s your idea of a perfect Thursday? Tell me about it 🙂

Bringing out the good in evil
Sep 20th, 2004 by Anders Kringstad

When you think of a hopeless situation with absolutely no good, you may feel depressed. What good is there to go on if there is no chance of making it through? Why bother to move on when you know you will fail? These questions have been rised and with varying success explained throughout history. I’ll make my own stab right now. Like professor Tolkien wrote in his books there is hope, even at times when there is none. Thus, man will go on, try his best even yet he knows that he will fail. This is part of our nature. To suffer until the end. The brave ones are they who fight and die when defeat are at their doorstep. The weak hide, and try to pull through. I would like to think of myself as one of the first category but I will know better. Rather living a life in shame than not being alive? or? Who knows? In situations of desperation, of fear, and extreme times people who may never thought of being a hero will try his or her best to do the things needed. From time to time, we hear of people with ‘super powers’ who moved cars, lifted rocks or did other not very thinkable things to help their peers. The power they get are due to massive releases of various fluids in our brain and blood when we are under extreme pressure. What would you do if a 10ton truck were soon to run down your girlfriend? Would you be paralyzed or would you run like through fire to stop it? At the cost of your own life? Of your and her life?

Okey, let’s leave that trail for tomorrow. I went to Samfundet last night, got drunk, did some ‘Berging, had a few beers and did my first apperance at a saturday debate. That was rather scary. I’ll try to be more prepared the next time. Earlier today we went bikeriding. 41 Km’s. I’ve passed 1000 Km’s of registered time now 🙂

The daily sysadmin rant & Friday evening plans
Sep 17th, 2004 by Anders Kringstad

Did you ever think that your users were on the system to provide you with a clean good way of living your life? Think again. They mess things up. Even the most wellintended users mess things up from time to time. This time it was a poorly written webpage that took the entire webserver offline. It’s no good when your webpage spawns 40 apache-httpd-requests and 20-or-so mysql-requests to build ONE page. That’s what made Igloo kneel yesterday evening.

After getting the box online again, with a new kernel and doing some filesystemchecks I decided to investigate what made the horror evolve the way it did this morning. What I found made me rather shocked. The above mentioned webpage contains poorly written php wich calls mysql to print the pages. Fine, nerdehaven.no are also built with php and mysql, but this page does not kneel the server when a page is loaded twice in 10 seconds. The other page however, did just that. To avoid further services interuption we locked away the webpage by moving its content into a new folder and placing a “temporarily out of order”-page in its place. The owners of the page will be asked to clean up if they shall be allowed to return. To further avoid misconfigured webpages from kneeling the server we modified the Apache configuration some to allow fewer running children and a more rapid termination of stale children.

Now, on with the show. It’s partyday, so I put on my best tshirt, okay maybe not the best, but I enjoy the NUCCC-2004 tshirt. It’s size ‘L’ so I dont have to think of it being to large for my new me. We’re going out. Yes. Grep are having a little time off from the computer industry to rant about whatnot and whatelse. Warming up with a gocart race and some laser-gunfighting we’ll party until the cabs take us home sometime during the night.

The rest of you may not join but, I hear there’s a party at Samfundet tonight. It’s rather suspiciously named ‘klinfæst’ or ‘makeoutparty’ if you prefer the english name. Have fun.
