As some may have picked up, a little outfit who are very evasive about their funding (AdTI) are to write a book about the history of UNIX (ehm, try a search on google about that one huh?:)
Last year I had the pleasure of getting to read Tanenbaum’s book: ‘Operating Systems’ as a part of my CS at NTNU. Well, well. Turns out that the author have taken the time to publish some of the facts from a conversation he had with the AdTI author, Brown. You may find the stuff at http://www.cs.vu.nl/~ast/brown/. It’s interesting reading, and I highly recomend it 🙂
Hullo little Shirelings. Aiya Meldon. I am once again back from the far south (Spain) and this time the Happy 4 Campers Spain Inc give you not only 10 or 20 pictures, but hundreds. Over at the gallery you may find the gallery tagged “Spain” and browse your way from there, or you can use this link to access the recent pictures from the trip to Spain. At writing there was 188 pictures to view of all sizes and contents. Some of them even include what may be described as nothing less than “Costa Blancas worst rain since 1943” – Get the grip of that huh? The day we came by plane to Alicante the rainclouds opened the gates of hell upon us and it rained for two days straight. Some of the first pictures clearly show this. By sunrise day 3 the sun shined, and it was all nice until we left again on the 19th.
In other news there’s quite a few computerparties going on right now. Today brings AuLAN III and next weekend is the landmark of yet another huge party as VikaLAN sets off the alarm with space for more than 400 visitors. I’ll be present at both.
Last nite we rigged the Aula where AuLAN III will take place, and the network was online without problems after some tweaking by the Tech:crew, by 00:00 this morning it was all set to go. Even the pizzas for the kiosk was in place. I may be so frank that even upfront claim that this will be one of the greater parties in quite some time in Trondheim. Ttyl, work 🙂
Without any further babble: I’m going to Spain on Tuesday. I’ll be home again the 19th in the evening sometime. Before Tuesday I’m going to Oslo. That’s tomorrow, on Saturday the 8th. I’m suppose to hook up with Ivar (smygarn) and go by train. Hopefully the railway is still there after the huge flood yesterday.
Work is just as usual. Phonecalls, system checks, compiling programs. Working on servers. I’d wish the sun would go away so I’d have to quit smiling, but I can’t.. It’s summer 🙂
Monday and Tuesday passed slowly. I did some walking, biked some, went to work and all. In the afternoons I got to do some chatting on IRC, and also managed to put in some cafè-chillouting with Anders (andai) & Andreas (falxx).
The TLUG-logo is coming together. My grandfather did some drawings for the objects in the logo, namely the fortress on a height in Trondheim (Kristiansten festning) and the Church, the Nidaros Dome. My uncle is creating a penguin we may use in some formats and I look forward to having it all finished.
A rental car have been rented, the keys I get from my dad tonight, and the planetickets are ready. The tickets for the train is all that is lacking now, and those Ivar (smygarn) are suppose to have :p – Next week I’ll be gone, in Spain, and I do not know if I will be able to post here :p Who cares tho? 🙂
I’m really no big fan of those fancy redflag-marches that have become yet again sortof popular on the 1st of May. So in light of this I woke up late, at aprox. 1300, had a bottle of water, IRC’ed some.. and then out of the clear blue sky I decided to go biking some. At about this time the clock had gotten to be 1400-1410, and the sun was shining. I asked on IRC if anyone would like to join me on a little bikeride, .. to Stjørdal. I actually got an answer from ‘trol0s’, or Alexander if you like. We decided to meet up at 1445 in a local park, and off we went. No planning, no big ideas, just a bikeride.
After riding through town we got out in the open across the fields around Ranheim and headed further north through Malvik until we came to Hommelvik. There we had to decide if to climb the really huge road up the hill towards Stjørdal or to go along the coast, near the railway. We decided for the later, and rided towards the fjord. At first the old road seemed fine and dandy. Then, the asphalt disapaired, leaving us with a wooden road with lots of grass, but still, it had tracks from some sort of vehicle. Further on we hit rocks and more wooden roots popped up all over leaving us no choice but to walk with the bikes. Then we found a sign, telling us about that this part of the road was from 1859!. I mean, 1859, thats _old_. The infosign closed off with wishing us “good luck on old and partly disolved roads”. Woha!. Then we found a bench, so we stopped and had some water wich Alexander had been smart enough to bring. He also had an apple for each. Very nice move!
A little further on we had to put the bikes up on our shoulders to climb a little rocks. A sign told us that here, the making of the railway in the 50ies had caused the old road to tumble down into the sea, but that it would show up a little to the north. Okay.. No problem there? 20 meters up and 20 meters to the north the road came back, so we climbed back down along a wooden path covered with more roots. Luckily for us the road soon turned into a more reliable thing with less roots so we could bike again, and we soon found some houses and streetlights. Back to the asphalt again.
So, it was back up the final hill towards Stjørdal. Climbing off our bikes about halfway we took pictures along the roadsign with the municipal border between the north and southern Trøndelag. The pic of me with my bike can be found here. The last hill away, it was just cruising down to “Central” Stjørdal and the local gas-station for a bottle of water and an Icecream. Those 110 kcal was really worth it!
After some relaxing at the railstation we headed towards the airport and took the airport shuttle-bus back to Trondheim since we did not feel quite up for the task of riding those 35 km’s back. All in all the ride for me was 44 km’s including some minor riding from Trondheim central station and back home.
The whole thing was quite awsome and I belive I will go for some other ride some day soon, or maybe when I return from Spain, oh btw, I’m going to Spain next week. 🙂
The title is really a quote from “Sensation 2003” – a little 38000~100 000 people party in Amsterdam during the summer. I don’t know about the rest of you, but Fridays have always given me a very good feeling. It’s really something about the fact that I for sure know that tonight and tomorrow I can relax, sleep and party if I like, without supervision or special timeframe limits. Drifting.. away!
Last nite I finished the final Graduation coat I will be doing drawings for this year. It’s main image consist of Beastie, the FreeBSD-daemon, who with a huge hammer smashes the logo of the school (Katta) that the student who requested the coat goes to.In a related case, I have now gotten pictures of the other coat I’ve made this year, BK’s precious “love turtles” may be seen here: Album01: Graduation Coats
Tonight it’s partytime, it’s the finally night before May, and as we all now, the hordes of youngsters from the town of Trondheim will occupy the great grass field along the river named “The navy”, or in norwegian: Marinen. The police have said they’ll be there with extra bobbies, and some voluntary parents who patrol the night looking out for the youngsters. I myself will kick off the evening with some beer and stuff at home with some friends. Wanna join? Give me a call 😛
After a very successfull BBQ-session with members from Trondheim Linux User Group I got Stein Magnus (jodal) to join me on a bikeride last nite. The BBQ included me getting rid of 2 kgs of sliced chicken wich was due for removal from my fridge in june anyways :p
The bikeride took us from nerdehaven, over to Singsaker Student home were Stein Magnus got his bikinggear and of we went. Next up was Nardo, and from there we took the now familiar route outside the E6-highway up to Voll. After a quick stop to have some water we took the last hill up to Lohove, entering Dragvoll after a ride of 1 hour or so. Since Stein Magnus hadnt really been to Campus Dragvoll before we took a swing around some of campus and got to see the huge (empty) parkinglot. Cruiseing down from Dragvoll we allmost got run down by a stupid cardriver who did not intend to stop for us, and entered Chalottenlund. After just sitting on our seats down the hills from Chalottenlund the small hills towards Lade was only a pleasent ride. Since we were all out there I showed Stein Magnus my former highschool Ringve VGS and then we headed home, across the Lade peninsula, the harbour and finally across Bakklandet.
Ofcourse I got a bit tired after all this biking, and came to work ten minutes late today. After work today I will go to my grandparents for dinner, and then I’m going to meet with my uncle to discuss a new logo for both NetCore and TLUG. (He works as a graphical designer and all.)
As of now I really look forward to the sping. The sun is shining allmost every day, and the little rain that we get is only healthy. Soon it’s May, and I will be going to Oslo, then Spain.
In other news I have been quite bussy with one of the new NetCore projects of late, learning new stuff both usefull at work and at home: Check out https://tannery.netcore.no/ if you want to know more about it 🙂
While I may refer to third party sources for most of my weekend activities (whiskey, dancing and bowling) I prefer to just type the following:
Friday: Roger (James_B) came, and him, me and Lars (N`Grath) ate dinner, then Svein (ph) came by, and Simen (Senilix) and we had some drinks, some more drinks and some more whiskey. Svein turned 18 last week and we just *had* to take him out on town 🙂
After sobering up, sortof on Saturday me and Roger went to town and had breakfeast at Big Bite. Then we met with Berit (Bertine) and her friend Tove who were going to join us with her boyfriend when we were going to Club-Wonderland in the evening. Then I shopped some clothes, and for the first time since 1996 or so I got inside a t-shirt labeled “L” for “Large”. That was a very nice feeling! After shopping some food and alcohol we then moved over to nerdehaven for some dinner.
Ofcourse I had to make pepperbeef with spicy texas potatoes. I also got to try out my new sauce-recipe that I halfway got from Anders (Hardy) one day when we were chatting on the phone about food (again). A mix of rosèpeppersauce and some lightly brownish sauce for steaks made a very tastefull and sweet sauce. Too bad that neither Roger or Berit mannaged to tell me that they did not fancy too spicy food :p (They drank a whole lot of water.) Then we got drunk again, or just refilled, as I was still a bit slow from the past night. A 350 ml of Famous Grouse Whiskey down the hatch, then some hot’n sweet shots, and off we went.
Club-Wonderland was as usual very good. I danced for 4-5 hours and was very happy all the time. Most of all I was happy because I felt light as a feather. Aaron Liberator was there from the UK and played hard, sweet music. NoModE himself threw in a set and so did also some others. The party was great and after a nachspiel I slept until about 1030.
Sunday was a bit more hard. I had to sober up, finish up the graduation jacket that was due for delivery and clean house. All went very well.
Ofcourse I feel asleep on the couch at about 2030 and woke up at 2340ish. That ruined my sleep, yes, I did not mannage to sleep until 0200. The rest of monday was great tho. I went to work, did my 8 hours, went home, had two fajitas with chicken and chili. Then it was time for some bikeriding 🙂 only 18 km’s tho, I felt refreshed after the little 48 minute swing. Afterwards I went to my grandmother and grandfather and said hello, before I finished of with a cafè together with Svein (ph), Anders (andai) and Andreas (falxx).
After work on Wednesday I went over to my dad and stephmom Eva to have dinner. The wok they made was really tasty, and since I myself do like hot food I also enjoyed the chili sauce and the texas spiece wich I added.
When dinner was finished I got some healthy tips from Eva about the taxrepport wich are due next week. I really should be spending more time looking at those numbers, because *something* must be wrong :p
Then it was time for some bikeriding! I bought myself a pair of bikeglowes, to comfort my hands and headed over to Magnus U.’s (meheeco) place. Him and me took our bikes for a little swing, just 18km’s south of central Trondheim.. To be honest we took a path called ‘route Heimdal’, along the Bjørndalen valley. Upon reaching Heimdal we headed for Sandmoen, crossing under the highway, turning north again through Tiller. We had time for some sightseeing, and I showed Magnus the places I grew up. Things haven’t really changed at Tiller, the houses still have the same colors, and the kids still play soccer at the same field that I helped to make when I was 6.
A quick stop at the local Gas-station delayed us for about ten minutes. (Water really taste very good after riding aprox. 22 km’s.) The road took us over to Nedre Leirfoss, one of the local powerstations, were we crossed the dam-bridge and headed towards Lerchendal. When I finally reached home I had been out biking for 2,5 hours and had in total taken a trip of 32 km’s. That’s quite nice for a idle Wednesday afternoon!
Thursday the 22nd was the day I was suppose to clean my house for the weekend and do some drawings for one of the student-coats for graduation wich I am helping to make. The drawing consists of two turtles, were the left one have been pushed out of it’s shell by the right one. The right one, still holding the shell looks at the left one with huge eyes. Above this display the slogan “Love Hurts” shall be displayed when the thing is finished.
I did not do all of that on Thursday.. After riding my bike home from work, picking up some colored permanent markers for the drawing I had dinner, watched the news and feel asleep on the couch. Waking up at about 2320 I just tumbled over to my bedroom and instantly fell asleep again. I woke up at 0245, and got to work on the drawing. At 0630 the colors had ben put on, the outlines marked with black, and the coat hung on my computeroom-door for drying up. During the weekend I will add the small extra details that have been requested on the small pockets. If I get time I’ll also get a a few pics of it for my gallery 🙂
Since I was already awake I decided to do some cleaning. Put on the washingmachine, did the dishes and removed some garbage from my computer room and went to work.
Lets do some MRTG-graphs!Since I somewhat felt in a hacky mood at work today I decided to learn something new about MySQL and some php. It’s not like I don’t know some about those from before, but since I am by all means a sysadmin, and not a developer/coder my heart trully lies within the systems themself. After poking around the net for a while I found a few tips and tricks on how to create all sorts of graphs with MRTG if you had the apropriate SNMP-MIB. Well, acording to my brain there is no SNMP-MIB for the number of aterms running at my workstation. That triggered me to create a shellscript that through grep, cut,wc and ps creates a nice little number that needs to be put into MySQL. I’m not quite sure why I wanted it to be in a MySQL-db, as it’s just one row in the db, with that single number in it, but heey.. :pAfter creating a shellscript that successfully counted the number of running aterms, parsing them into a mysql-sentence and running that on the remote databaseserver it was time to head over to the php and perl-scripts. MRTG runs mostly as a daemon, reading data from a configfile. The configfile in this particular setup is a file containing a php-script that is executed and reads out the number from the MySQL-db. Thus I present to all you – The number of aterms @earthquake.And just remember folks.. you saw it here first (even tho there’s someone at Uninett that has a similar ting)
